In Collaboration With

 International Geo-Hazards Research Society

Geo-Hazards are the events caused by geological features and processes that present severe threats to humans, property and the natural environment. Earthquakes, floods, landslides, volcanoes, avalanches and tsunamis are the most common geohazards on the land. In terms of number of fatalities, earthquakes and floods are often considered the worst devastating geo-hazards. Tsunami is another type of geo-hazard that is relatively rare, but the recent tragic events in the Indian Ocean and Japan showed the devastating nature. There is an urgent need to improve our basic understanding of the technical, financial and social risks posed by these geohazards, the relationships between those risks, and our ability to coup them.

International Geo-Hazards Research Society (IGRS) is dedicated to the dissemination of scientific information on all aspects of natural hazards; namely earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, floods, radiation hazards, and all related topics. IGRS has been holding biannual symposium on Geo-Hazards Research at different cities of the world with no geographic limit, to provide a forum for meaningful interaction among scientists working on Geo-Hazards research. The Third International Symposium of this series will be organized by the Department of Physics, H.N.B. Garhwal University at Badshahi Thaul Campus, Tehri Garhwal, India during June 10-14, 2012. The symposium would cover the following themes:

  1. Earthquake
  2. Landslides
  3. Volcanoes
  4. Tsunami
  5. Anthropogenic activities
  6. Dam instability
  7. Man-induced geohazards (induced seismicity etc.)
  8. Disaster management
  9. Gas and hydro geochemistry
  10. Nuclear accidents
  11. Radiation hazards

Submission of abstracts & papers

Scientific papers are invited on the related topics of the symposium. The abstract limited to 300 words, should be typed with 1½ line spacing on A4 size paper with font size 12 in Times New Roman giving 2.5 cm margin on all sides should reach the Convener, IGRS2012 latest by February 25, 2012 at email address

The Venue

H.N.B. Garhwal University Campus, Badshahi Thaul is situated on the way between Chamba and New Tehri at a distance of 3 km from Chamba, one of the brightest spots of district Tehri Garhwal, at an elevation of 1676 m from sea level. This town, situated on Delhi-Gangotri national highway, offers one of the most spectacular view of snow capped Himalaya and enchanting Bhagirathi Valley. The university campus is situated at an elevation of 1750 m on a ridge facing to the east, surrounded by dense oak and pine tree forest. It is at a distance of 8 km from New Tehri, a newly established master-planned township at an elevation of 1900 m and district headquarter of Tehri Garhwal. The famous Tehri Dam along with a huge lake between mountains, situated at a distance of 20 km from university campus, is a recent addition to the tourist attractions in the area.

Nearest Airport (Linked to Delhi) is Jollygrant (Dehradun) at a distance of 85 km from university campus. Rishikesh is the nearest railway station at a distance of 65 km. However, Haridwar is more convenient (distance 90 km) as it is well connected to all major cities of India by rail.

The university campus, Badshahi Thaul is well connected by road to all important stations of Garhwal Division like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Mussoorie, Uttarkashi and other parts of the region. Frequent bus services as well as private taxies and jeeps are available from these places to Chamba and New Tehri. It takes about 3 hours to reach Badshhai Thaul by bus from Haridwar and Dehradun, and about 2 hours from Rishikesh.
